Grandma Gone Granola™: Simple, Inexpensive Tips for Healthy Living
Our nation’s First Lady recently announced a campaign called “Let’s Move” to eliminate childhood obesity in America in a generation. The four pillars of her program are ambitious but doable: (1) inform parents about nutrition and exercise; (2) improve the quality of food in our schools; (3) make healthy foods affordable and accessible for all families; and (4) focus more on physical education.
Whether or not you board the “Let’s Move” train, you can become informed and intentional, as Joan Webb would say (www.intentionalwoman.com), regarding exercise and the foods you purchase, prepare and put in your mouth. One way to be intentional about eating is to consume unprocessed food. “Whole foods are more healthful because they contain no potentially harmful ingredients. In addition, plant foods are full of hundreds of phytochemicals that can help prevent disease and keep the body healthy. These are our front-line defenders against cancer and free radicals.” (Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A. Balch)
Few, if any, of us are able to eat fresh foods all the time, so in a later blog, we’ll talk about the value of reading labels on canned, boxed and frozen foodstuff.
p.s. For those who cook, I just ran across this site: http://everythingishomemade.com (has some tempting recipes and even includes a picture of a label on a can!).
Hi Becky – thanks for the link to my blog. I completely agree with your post today! Everyone needs more whole and plant-based foods in their diets. Every little change helps! I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say. Maybe we can swap some tips!

Nice post, Becky. “Intentional” in life is a great mantra for more than just what we put in our mouths. If the principle is taught early, we’ll not only have healthier bodies, we’ll have healthier minds.
